Rad Track Gera | Renovation & Bike Races

The Rad Track Gera in Debschwitz at Haeckelstraße 39 is one of the most distinctive track cycling facilities in Thuringia. Those searching for Rad Track Gera, track cycling, renovation, photos, or bike races in Gera will find themselves in a place that uniquely combines tradition, club life, and sporting future. The city describes the facility as an oval concrete track amidst greenery, and this contrast is precisely what makes it appealing: Here, historical sports culture meets current plans for a modern revival. At the same time, the track remains a central meeting point for young talents, training groups, and events that attract attention far beyond the city. ([gera.de](https://www.gera.de/meldung/sanierung-radrennbahn-vorbereitungen-schreiten-voran))

The current attention surrounding the Rad Track Gera is no coincidence. The city of Gera has been intensively working on a renovation in recent years, the facility has been further developed in planning and reviewed by the UCI, and the SSV Gera is also actively engaged with a broad training and competition offering. As a result, the Rad Track is not only a search term for history and photo opportunities but also for concrete sporting use, youth promotion, and the question of how a traditional sports venue can be led into the future. Renovation of the Rad Track Gera: What is currently planned

The renovation of the Rad Track Gera is one of the most important sports projects of the city. According to the city administration, the design planning has been in place since the end of 2025, and the UCI has signaled that the regulations for international competitions have been adequately considered. In April 2026, the city additionally reported that the budget committee of the German Bundestag had approved funding of 4.1 million euros from the so-called sports billion. Previously, the city had applied for around 4.2 million euros from the federal program for the renovation of municipal sports facilities and additionally requested around 2.9 million euros from the state of Thuringia. These figures show that modernization is not just a vision, but a politically and financially concretely prepared project. ([gera.de](https://www.gera.de/meldung/sanierung-radrennbahn-vorbereitungen-schreiten-voran))

According to the city, a new track made of reinforced concrete with a special coating is planned, along with competition-compliant inner and outer bands, modern track lighting, a new sound system, and more attractive areas for staying inside the track. The seating grandstand is also to be expanded and modernized to approximately 1,400 seats. The goal is explicitly not just a repair of the existing facility, but the return of the Rad Track Gera as a venue for high-class races and international competitions. Therefore, those searching for Rad Track Gera renovation will not find just a construction site report, but a plan that repositions the historical facility both sportively and infrastructurally. For clubs, young talents, and cycling fans, this is an important perspective, as the track could become more visible again in the competition calendar. History of the Rad Track Gera since 1934

The history of the Rad Track Gera goes back much further than the current concrete track. The SSV Gera describes that a first track already existed at this location in 1934, then as a 400-meter-long earth track. The site was originally a shooting range before it was used for cycling. After the destructions of World War II, air raid shelters and debris had to be removed before a new construction could begin. In the post-war period, a 250-meter-long track with cinder surface was created, which was initially inaugurated as a cinder track. The development shows very well that the Rad Track Gera is not just any sports facility, but a repeatedly rebuilt and continuously fought-for place in the local sports history. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/presse/2017/370))

In the 1950s, the facility was brought up to the level of a modern track cycling venue. Between 1955 and 1957, the dimensions of the track known today were established: 250 meters in length, 7 meters in width, 38.5 degrees in bank height, and a surface area of 1,900 square meters. On May 26, 1957, the track was ceremonially opened. The SSV Gera emphasizes that more than 3,000 volunteer construction hours were contributed to this effort within the National Reconstruction Program. Culturally, the track was long more than just a sports venue: Summer film days and the Gera Forest and Dahlia Festival were once held on the grounds. Therefore, those searching for Rad Track Gera history will discover a facility that has shaped the sporting and social life of the city in multiple ways. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/presse/2017/370))

Dimensions, Track Profile, and Training Operations on the 250m Oval

The Rad Track Gera is technically clearly classified as a classic 250-meter track. According to SSV Gera, the surface measures 250 meters in length and 7 meters in width; the bank height is 38.5 degrees or 4.60 meters. Thus, the track corresponds to a form that is widely regarded as the international standard in track cycling. For riders, this is a precise environment where tactics, speed, and cornering skills come together. The facility is therefore not only a historical symbol but also a functional sports device that places clear demands on technique, material, and training. This profile is particularly relevant for search queries such as Rad Track Gera 250m or Track Bike Gera. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/presse/2017/370))

The current training operations show that the track is still actively used for sports. The SSV Gera offers track training for everyone from April to September; it can be done with road or track bikes, and the dates are arranged by appointment, with prior registration required. Additionally, there is the Kids' Bike Diploma, aimed at children aged about 6 to 13 years, conducted in the area of the Rad Track. In several practice sessions, skills such as safe starts, braking, maintaining a line, cornering techniques, and endurance are trained. This combination of a top-class sports facility and an accessible entry point makes the Rad Track Gera equally interesting for families, schools, and clubs. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/trainingszeiten/bahntraining))

Track Cycling, Youth, and Competitions in Gera

The Rad Track Gera today thrives particularly on youth. The TAG Wohnen Youth Track Cup, organized by SSV Gera on its track, is open to all age groups from beginners to U17 and includes several competitions per event with an overall ranking. The structure of the series already shows that it is not just about a single race, but about continuous development, sporting commitment, and the promotion of young talents. The official club page documents several races per season, some with photo galleries and reports. For all those searching for Rad Track Gera Cup or Cycling Youth Gera, this is the central source of information. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/bahncup/2024))

Particularly impressive was the start of the 2025 season: SSV Gera reported a successful kickoff with 73 participants from seven Thuringian cycling clubs, the track was prepared for training and competition operations again, and the host provided the largest starting field with 52 participants. Such numbers show how lively the track is used in the club's daily life. Additionally, the Rad Track is regularly used for talent scouting, points racing, team pursuit, and age-class races. The track is therefore not a museum-like monument, but a place where young talents gain experience in a real racing atmosphere. This is precisely one of the greatest appeals of the Rad Track Gera: it combines tradition with an ongoing sporting development process. Olaf Ludwig Cup and Bike Races in Gera

When it comes to bike races in Gera, the Olaf Ludwig Cup is an essential part. At the 18th Olaf Ludwig Cup of Gera schools in 2025, around 200 participants came together at the Rad Track in Debschwitz; the third and fourth graders competed in a 500-meter time trial on the historic oval. Gera's honorary citizen Olaf Ludwig was personally present, awarded prizes, and thus made the event a piece of city history. For the schools and children, the format is more than just a competition: it is a very visible entry into the cycling culture of the city, where movement, school life, and prominent identification figures come together. Therefore, those searching for Rad Track Gera Olaf Ludwig Cup will find a genuine, recurring event with strong local ties. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/presse/2025/561))

Beyond the school competition, the Rad Track Gera remains closely connected to road and track cycling. The East Thuringia Tour will start in 2026 with its prologue in front of the Rad Track in Debschwitz, confirming the facility as the starting point of a regionally significant stage race. In the club and competition announcements of SSV Gera, track cup races, training sessions, time trials, and other cycling formats also appear. This creates a versatile picture: the track serves as a stage for students, for the youth cup, for ambitious club riders, and for events that represent the city in sports. This is precisely why bike races in Gera are not just a search term, but a fitting description of what regularly happens there. Rad Track Gera in Debschwitz: Location, Photos, and Surroundings

The Rad Track Gera is located in the Debschwitz district and can be reached at Haeckelstraße 39, 07548 Gera. The location is well positioned for local cycling fans, as the SSV Gera is also based there. In the official contributions from the city, the facility is depicted as an oval concrete track amidst greenery; this makes the sports venue visually particularly attractive and explains why many users search for Rad Track Gera photos. Those who want to get an impression in advance can find current press images, competition photos, and views of the track on the pages of the city of Gera and SSV Gera, which very well show the character of the place. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/pages/kontakt))

The surroundings are strongly influenced by cycling. The city of Gera refers in its cycling traffic information to its general bike-friendliness, the Elster bike path, and other bike paths in and around the city. For the Rad Track itself, this means: it is embedded in an environment where bike culture, club work, and sports promotion come together. Especially the combination of city forest, Debschwitz, and the visibly green location defines the character of the facility. Therefore, those not only looking for hard facts but also for atmosphere and imagery will quickly realize that the Rad Track Gera does not appear as an anonymous arena, but as a developed sports venue with a strong local connection. Directions, Visit, and Practical Tips for Athletes and Families

For visitors, it is important to know that SSV Gera clearly organizes its training and event offerings. Track training takes place from April to September, participation is by appointment, and the Kids' Bike Diploma is also conducted by prior registration in the area of the Rad Track. Therefore, those coming to the Rad Track Gera for training, youth races, or an event should not expect an anonymous large sports facility, but a club facility with fixed contacts. The most important contact details of the club are Haeckelstraße 39, 07548 Gera, phone 0365-7113548, and the email addresses info@ssv-gera.de and buero@ssv-gera.de. ([ssv-gera.de](https://ssv-gera.de/trainingszeiten/bahntraining))

Regarding parking and detailed directions, the verified official pages do not mention a dedicated visitor parking area for the Rad Track itself, so the specific arrival should be based on the guidelines of SSV Gera or the city of Gera depending on the event. This is also sensible because the renovation planning may further change the facility in the coming years, and individual accesses or processes may deviate during the construction phases. Therefore, those searching for Rad Track Gera directions or Rad Track Gera parking should always check the current event information. The same applies to search queries regarding Rad Track Gera accidents: the officially verified announcements currently focus on renovation, training operations, and youth, not current accident reports. This combination of current development and sporting continuity makes the facility so interesting today. ([gera.de](https://www.gera.de/meldung/sanierung-radrennbahn-vorbereitungen-schreiten-voran))

Old and traditional cycling track in the cycling city of Gera. Unfortunately, the track is weather-sensitive, and many races are canceled or don't take place at all due to rain and humidity. One can hope that in the future, sponsors and political support will come together, and the track will be renovated soon.

A traditional place that is so important for Gera's external image. International cycling legends, Olympic champions, and world champions have grown up here, and young cyclists are still being guided towards the successes of their role models. Unfortunately, neither the city fathers and mothers nor the rulers in the state government seem to recognize or appreciate this. In short: the track clearly shows the signs of time and needs significant renewal. Nevertheless, young talents keep spinning their laps and are developed by dedicated coaches in their sport to the point where they are gladly brought to the performance centers of the state capital to reap successes that carry an Erfurt seal.
