Theater Altenburg Gera | Schedule & Tickets 2026

Theater Altenburg Gera is much more than a single stage: The institution connects two traditional theater locations in Gera and Altenburg, unites five divisions, and represents a particularly broad cultural offering in Thuringia with musical theater, ballet, drama, puppet theater, and concerts. Externally, the house appears as a grown cultural cosmos, where historical architecture, current directorial scripts, and a very active regional anchoring complement each other. The official and formal presentation of the house shows an ensemble operation with around 300 employees and up to 900 events in Gera and Altenburg, making it a theater that not only produces premieres but also shapes the cultural calendar of an entire region. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/ueber-uns/stellenangebote/schauspieler-md/?utm_source=openai))

Those interested in Theater Altenburg Gera usually look for specific things: the schedule for 2026, current events, tickets, directions, parking, or the best seats in the auditorium. That is precisely why it is worth taking a look at the structure of this house. In Gera, the Großes Haus, the Bühne am Park, and the concert hall shape the face of the theater; in Altenburg, the Großes Haus, the theater tent, and the Heizhaus are added. Together, this creates a dual location that not only focuses on great classics but also on festivals, world premieres, musical theater, family formats, and concerts. This makes Theater Altenburg Gera exciting for regular guests as well as for visitors spending an evening here for the first time. Schedule, Premieres, and Upcoming Events 2026

The schedule is the heart of the inquiries surrounding Theater Altenburg Gera, and this is no coincidence: The house communicates its premieres, dates, and special events very visibly through the official schedule and premiere page. There, the current season can be followed as well as a look ahead to the 2026/27 season. Already on the homepage, the new season is announced, while the theater highlights current highlights such as the International Ballet Festival Gera26, which takes place from May 8 to 21 in Gera, as well as the Children's and Youth Theater Festival WILDWECHSEL, which is scheduled for late May in Gera. So, if you are looking for theater altenburg gera today or theater altenburg gera upcoming events, you will find a real mix of daily programs, premieres, and season previews on the official pages. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/))

The specific premieres also show how broad the theater is set up. For 2026, the premiere overview mentions Rhythm Is a Dancer as a drama with ballet, Frankenstein as a musical in Altenburg, Jeu de Cartes / Pulcinella as a ballet double evening, Pinocchio in puppet theater, Minna von Barnhelm in Gera, and later more premieres of the 2026/27 season. This makes it clear that the schedule not only focuses on classical literature but also on pop cultural materials, new musical theater forms, and family-friendly productions. This mix explains why the house is attractive both for people with very specific favorite pieces and for curious explorers. So, if you are looking for theater altenburg gera frankenstein or theater altenburg gera rhythm is a dancer, you are actually looking for a stage that consciously brings together current events and tradition. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/spielplan/premieren/))

It is practical that the theater not only streams its schedules live online but also makes them available for download. On the official download page, you can find season brochures, leaflets, and overviews, allowing visitors to prepare well. This is particularly helpful when combining a theater visit with travel, a restaurant visit, or hotel accommodation. Additionally, the premiere and event pages often note introductions before the start, premiere celebrations afterward, or hints about special formats. This mix of information and experience leads to the schedule not just being a list of dates but an invitation to actively experience the cultural rhythm of the cities of Gera and Altenburg. Seating Plan, Seats, and Best Views in Gera and Altenburg

A very common search impulse is theater altenburg gera photos or theater altenburg gera seating plan, as many guests want to know what the respective house looks like and how many seats it has before purchasing. Theater Altenburg Gera meets this expectation with several clearly distinguishable venues. In Altenburg, the Großes Haus has a maximum seating capacity of 492 seats and three tiers with proscenium and middle boxes, according to the official theater website. In Gera, the Großes Haus offers two core spaces with different uses: the theater hall with 552 seats and the concert hall with 812 seats. The Bühne am Park is a studio stage that can be flexibly equipped with up to 160 seats. This division makes the house interesting because depending on the production, a different spatial feeling arises. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/ueber-uns/spielstaetten-altenburg/grosses-haus/))

For visitors, this variety is a real advantage. Those who want to experience opera, ballet, or grand musical evenings often end up in the large room with its representative architecture and extensive sightlines. In contrast, those who want to see a more intimate drama, a workshop production, or a smaller musical format benefit from the flexible proximity of the Bühne am Park or the specific characters of the Altenburg venues. The official seating plan page helps to understand the different houses: There, the Großes Haus Gera - Theater Hall, the Großes Haus Gera - Concert Hall, the Theater Tent Altenburg, the Bühne am Park, the Puppet Theater, the Brüderkirche, and the Heizhaus are listed separately. This makes it clear that the term seating plan here does not just refer to one hall but a whole network of spaces where you can get a different perspective on the art depending on the piece. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/service/saalplaene/))

Also, the accessibility information is important in this context as it is directly related to the choice of seats. The official page notes, for example, that the foyer and parquet in the theater hall and concert hall of the Großes Haus Gera are suitable for wheelchairs, that the Bühne am Park is accessible, and that the Theater Tent Altenburg and the Heizhaus are also designated as wheelchair accessible. The Puppet Theater currently has no barrier-free access. So, if you are specifically looking for the best seats, barrier-free access, or a specific spatial feeling, you can plan much more precisely than at many other theaters. This is one reason why the topics seating plan, seats, and best seats are so relevant at Theater Altenburg Gera. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/ueber-uns/spielstaetten-altenburg/grosses-haus/))

History, Architecture, and the Double House in Gera and Altenburg

The history of Theater Altenburg Gera is closely linked to two very different but equally traditional buildings. In Gera, the theater was built in 1901/02 according to plans by Heinrich Seeling in the northeastern Küchengarten. The city of Gera describes it as a T-shaped monumental building, largely financed by private donations, and at its opening on October 18, 1902, it was considered one of the most progressive houses of its time because the theater and concert hall were united under one roof. Stylistically, the building combines neo-Renaissance, classicism, and Art Nouveau. This is more than just architectural history: it explains why the Gera location remains a representative cultural site with a strong impact to this day. ([gera.de](https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/theater))

Altenburg also has its own long theater tradition. The Großes Haus was ceremoniously opened in 1871 with Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz. The official theater page explains that architect Otto Brückwald modeled the Renaissance building on the Dresden Court Theater, where he had been involved as an employee of Gottfried Semper. After war closures, renovations, and further modifications, the house was reopened in 1995, shortly after the merger with the stages of the city of Gera, with Der Freischütz once again. Particularly striking are the three tiers, the proscenium and middle boxes, and the elaborately designed ceiling and hall decorations. Thus, today, entering the Altenburg house means not only experiencing an evening at the theater but also a piece of vibrant architectural and cultural history. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/ueber-uns/spielstaetten-altenburg/grosses-haus/))

The connection of both houses to the present Theater Altenburg Gera was established in 1995 during a merger of the State Theater Altenburg with the stages of the city of Gera. The Wikipedia summary and the official statements of the house consistently show that this resulted in a Thuringian five-division house that has been operating again under the name Theater Altenburg Gera since 2019. This historical development is interesting for visitors because it explains why the house brings together two cities, different hall types, and several architectural epochs under a common brand. In other words: history here is not just a backdrop but part of the identity. ([de.wikipedia.org](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theater_Altenburg_Gera))

Management, Orchestra, Staff, and Artistic Structure

If you search for theater altenburg gera director or theater altenburg gera staff, you will quickly land at the official theater management. There, Kay Kuntze is named as the general director, artistic managing director, and opera director, as well as Mike Wittich as the commercial managing director. Additionally, the page lists Ruben Gazarian as the general music director, Vitaliy Petrov as the ballet director, Manuel Kressin as the drama director, and Susanne Koschig as the head and dramaturge of the puppet theater. This structure shows how strongly the house is organized by division: each division has its professional head, while the houses in Gera and Altenburg are thought of together. That is precisely why the theater functions as an ensemble operation and not just as a single venue. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/ueber-uns/))

At the artistic core is the Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg Gera. The official orchestra page mentions, among others, GMD Ruben Gazarian, the 1st conductor Thomas Wicklein, and concert dramaturge Liubov Morozova. The orchestra is not merely accompaniment but a defining pillar of the house, supporting musical theater, philharmonic concerts, and special formats. In another official statement, it is even mentioned that the orchestra was included in the funding program Excellent Orchestra Landscape Germany in 2017/18. Together with the choir, ballet, and drama and puppet theater departments, a comprehensive picture emerges that clearly explains why theater altenburg gera orchestra is among the frequent search terms. For many guests, this ensemble is precisely the reason to choose an evening in Gera or Altenburg. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/ueber-uns/mitarbeiterinnen/orchester/?utm_source=openai))

The number of employees and the breadth of the divisions are also important for understanding the house. An official job advertisement describes Theater Altenburg Gera as an institution with five divisions, about 300 employees, and up to 900 events in Gera and Altenburg. This underscores how great the organizational effort behind each evening is. For inquiries such as theater altenburg gera jobs or theater altenburg gera training, this is relevant because the theater not only produces art but is also a major employer and training location in the region. Those who look behind the scenes quickly realize that the house works not only for its audience but also as a cultural and economic factor on site. Accessibility, Service, and Practical Tips for Guests

A good theater website today must do more than just show the program and cast. Theater Altenburg Gera clearly states on its official accessibility page which contents are not yet barrier-free, that the online ticket shop itself is not barrier-free, and how visitors can instead contact the visitor service with ticket requests. At the same time, the page lists the accessible venues, transparently showing what is possible on site. This openness is a decisive service factor for many guests because it allows for better planning of travel, seat selection, and ticket purchase. For example, those coming with a wheelchair or with limited mobility can check in advance which venue is suitable. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/service/barrierefreiheit/))

It is also practical that the theater offers several service channels in parallel: telephone box offices, email contacts, a webshop, and the possibility to inform oneself through season brochures and leaflets. The homepage and service pages also show the locations where tickets can be purchased, such as the theater box office in Gera at Theaterplatz 1, the theater box office in Altenburg at Theaterplatz 19, and the tent box office in Altenburg shortly before performances. Those who plan their visit down to the minute benefit from the fact that the theater box offices have fixed opening hours and performance box offices open one hour before the start. This is particularly useful for spontaneous guests, subscribers, or families who want to organize their arrival around entry and breaks. ([theater-altenburg-gera.de](https://theater-altenburg-gera.de/service/kartenkauf/besucherservice/))

Visitors should also keep an eye on the current notices from the house. Several official pages point out a temporary parking restriction for the Hofwiesenparkplatz in Gera; at the same time, the venues are described in such a way that they remain easily accessible despite their different locations. In Altenburg, there are clear parking options with the theater parking lot, Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, and proximity to the castle, while in Gera, there are parking spaces at the theater and the underground garage in pentahotel. Especially for premieres, festivals, or sold-out performances, it is worthwhile to plan early and not to arrive shortly before the start. This way, the theater evening can be stress-free and focus entirely on what is at the center: the art on stage and the special atmosphere of a house that consciously thinks about tradition and the present. Incredible performance ("Festhalten"). The theater (Bühne am Park) has very comfy chairs, it's a nice building and the staff was very friendly. There were no snacks in the break, though. It's really outstanding how close you are to the actors/dancers. Really adds to the experience.
